To understand how some common habits may affect spinal health, Dr Gaurav Batra, neurosurgeon of the brain and spine at Max Super Speciality Hospital in Vaishali, told HT Lifestyle that the spine is the foundation of the body’s architecture, responsible for the majority of movements. However, several daily practices now jeopardize spinal health, resulting in severe backaches.

According to Dr Gaurav Batra, Neurosurgeon (Brain and Spine), Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali, the spine is a portion of the neurological system that transmits messages from the brain to the body. When the alignment is interrupted or force is applied to the spine, or when the spine is harmed, these messages are broken, resulting in pain, weariness, muscle shrinking, and organ failure. Apart from a backache, slouching for hours at a time, bad posture, or improper lifting will all have severe consequences.

Dr. Gaurav Batra explains: “The golden hour refers to the first 60 minutes after stroke onset, during which immediate medical care can save brain cells and restore blood flow.” During this vital period, medicines such as clot-busting thrombolytic drugs can avoid lasting brain damage and increase the likelihood of complete recovery. “It’s the most vital time to diagnose and start therapy to reduce disability and death,” according to him.

Dr. Gaurav Batra, Neurosurgeon (Brain & Spine), Max Super Speciality, Vaishali in Ghaziabad points to another promising shift: “Cenobamate and brivaracetam, two newer antiseizure medications that have found a strong foothold because they do the job with fewer side effects and fewer hospital visits.” Think of them as optimized firmware updates for the brain: stable, predictable, reducing noise without slowing down the system. “The idea behind them is simple: improve seizure control, reduce side effects, help patients live their lives, not their diagnoses,” he adds.

Women in their menopausal years need to understand this hormonal connection. With the reduction of estrogen, bones become thinner since the body cannot replace old bone as quickly as it once did, and the vertebrae may be more likely to fracture or become deformed. Physicians and doctors stress that proactive steps-regarding diet, exercise, and medical interventions, can be taken to protect the spine during menopause. In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr Gaurav Batra, Neurosurgeon (Brain & Spine), Max Superspeciality hospital, Vaishali, shares the hidden hormonal link between menopause and spine that every woman should know.

The modern time has delivered comfort at the click of a button. Laptops, mobiles, and endless streaming have made life easier, faster, and far more convenient. However, this convenience comes at a cost. We are sitting more than any generation before us, and our spines are paying the price for this comfort-driven routine. Long hours hunched over desks and screens are quietly undoing years of natural movement.

According to Dr Gaurav Batra, Neurosurgeon (Brain & Spine), Max Hospital, Vaishali, the damage is gradual but serious. “Sedentary behaviour puts continuous pressure on the spinal cord. Slowly, the muscles that support the spine weaken, blood flow to spinal discs reduces, and patients start experiencing lower back pain, stiffness, and loss of flexibility,” he explains. Slouching, forward head tilt, and that familiar mobile-phone bend are no longer harmless habits but medical red flags.

Brain aneurysms are the silent vascular damage you should never ignore. A brain aneurysm is regarded as a weakened area that bulges in the wall of one of the arteries in the brain. Many patients suffer from small brain aneurysms that are small and 80% do not produce any symptoms. However, if they burst, patients may suffer life-threatening bleeding strokes.

In this article, Dr. Gaurav Batra, Neurosurgeon (Brain & Spine), Max SuperSpeciality Hospital,Vaishali, helps us understand what exactly Brain aneurysms look like and what are the major contributing factors.

Nowadays, people between the ages of 35 and 40 are suffering from back and waist pain. Back and waist pain can be caused by many factors. People often mistake a slipped disc and sciatica for the same thing, but they are different. Let’s learn the difference between a slipped disc and sciatica from Dr. Gaurav Batra, neurosurgeon at Vaishali Max Hospital.

Lifestyle Desk, New Delhi. We often dismiss headaches as a minor problem. Stress, lack of sleep, dehydration, or eye strain can be common causes, but if you have a persistent headache, it keeps coming back, or it gets worse over time, it shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Dr. Gaurav Batra (Neurosurgeon – Brain & Spine, Max Hospital, Vaishali) explains that while headaches are often caused by benign causes, in rare cases they can be a sign of a serious illness, such as a brain tumor. Let’s explore this in detail.

Dr Batra notes that hydrotherapy works because warm water relaxes muscles and eases pain. “The buoyancy of water reduces pressure on joints and painful limbs, allowing patients to move more freely and safely than they might on land,” he explains.
This reduced load is particularly helpful for people who fear worsening their pain through conventional exercise.

Children and teens today face rising spine issues due to heavy school bags, long hours on screens, poor posture and stress, warns neurosurgeon Dr Gaurav Batra from Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali. Early awareness and healthy habits are key to protecting young backs.

Dr. Gaurav Batra, neurosurgeon at Max Hospital, Vaishali, explains that there’s a narrow passage inside our wrist called the carpal tunnel. A nerve called the median nerve runs through this passage. This nerve carries messages to the fingers and palm. When swelling or pressure builds up in this tunnel, the nerve becomes compressed. This is where the problem begins.

Chronic neck pain isn’t just the result of simple fatigue or the wrong pillow. Sometimes, it can be a sign of a serious spinal problem. Dr. Gaurav Batra, a neurosurgeon at Max Hospital in Vaishali, says that this pain has become common these days due to prolonged hunching over mobile phones and computers, poor posture, and stress. However, if the pain persists for several weeks or months, worsens repeatedly, or spreads to the shoulders and arms, it shouldn’t be ignored.

If you feel back pain or stiffness upon waking in the morning, it may not be just fatigue. Our bodies often send small signals before a major problem. Morning back pain can be one such significant signal, and it’s best not to ignore it. Dr. Gaurav Batra, neurosurgeon (brain and spine), explains that back pain upon waking in the morning should never be ignored.

According to Dr Gaurav Batra, Neurosurgeon at Max Hospital, Vaishali, sugar particularly affects the prefrontal cortex, which controls judgment and focus, and the hippocampus, which plays a key role in memory and learning.

Regular high sugar consumption may reduce brain plasticity, making it harder to concentrate and retain information.

Neck, waist, and back pain have become increasingly common these days. Previously, this problem was mostly seen in older adults, but now it’s rapidly increasing among young people as well. Experts say this is largely due to our changing lifestyles. Using mobile phones for hours, constantly working on laptops, and sitting in one place for long periods of time are all impacting spinal health. Many people, when they experience neck pain, back strain, or mild numbness in their legs, dismiss it as normal fatigue. According to Dr. Gaurav Batra, Neurosurgeon (Brain and Spine) at Max Hospital, Vaishali , these minor symptoms can sometimes be the beginning of a spinal problem. If these signs are recognized early, major problems can be avoided.

Common spine problems to avoid during gym workouts include Herniated Disc, Sciatica, Spondylolisthesis, and Muscle Strain. These can occur from poor form, heavy lifting, or lack of warm-up.

In advanced cases, such conditions may lead to nerve compression requiring specialized evaluation and, rarely, surgical management. However, most of these issues are preventable with correct technique and conditioning.

Fitness enthusiasts in the Gen Z generation need to understand that it is very important to develop strength in the body while at the same time maintaining flexibility. The solution to the problem of a stiff leg is the foundation of protecting the spine and improving workout performance. This is achievable through the right warm-up, correct workout, and correct lifting.

Dr. Gaurav Batra is a Consultant – Neurosurgeon (Brain & Spine) at Max Hospital, Vaishali.

Spinal tuberculosis, once a rare disease of older adults, is making its way into the lives of Gen Z. With subtle symptoms and lifestyle factors working against them, young people are unknowingly putting their spines at risk. Neurosurgeon suggests that awareness and early intervention are key to keeping your back straight and healthy:

Back pain used to be a problem you expected in your forties or fifties, not in your teens. But medical specialists reveal that spinal tuberculosis, also called Pott’s disease, is affecting the lives of Gen Z.

Spinal tuberculosis is caused when the tuberculosis bacteria, usually starting in the lungs, travel through the bloodstream and settle in the spine. This slow-moving infection gradually damages vertebrae, leading to stiffness, chronic back pain, and in severe cases, a hunched posture or even paralysis. “It’s a silent disease,” says Dr Gaurav Batra, neurosurgeon, Max Hospital, Vaishali. “The early symptoms are so mild that many young people dismiss them as ordinary back strain or bad posture”, he adds.

Diabetes does not only affect the limbs, it can also impact brain function in subtle but significant ways.Dr. Gaurav Batra, Neurosurgeon (Brain & Spine) at Max Hospital, Vaishali, explained that fluctuating blood sugar levels can influence cognitive health, often presenting as symptoms that are easy to dismiss.

He said, “Symptoms such as persistent headaches, lack of focus, memory lapses and unexplained fatigue may not immediately be linked to diabetes, but they can reflect underlying fluctuations in blood glucose levels. These manifestations are often mistaken for stress or routine exhaustion, which delays proper diagnosis and management. However, in many cases, they may be early indicators of prediabetes or diabetes.”

At the same time, Dr Gaurav Batra adds, “Any changes in cognition, like memory lapses or poor focus, may be an indication that your brain is under strain.”

Even slight dizziness or brief unsteadiness can hint at nerve compression or poor circulation. These are not dramatic signs, but they matter.

Summers in India is no longer just about rising temperatures. Increasing humidity levels are making heatwaves far more dangerous, creating conditions where the human body struggles to cool itself. At the centre of this growing concern is a lesser-known but critical concept called Wet-bulb temperature. Recent 2026 research, including a study published in Nature Communications, confirms that extremely hot, dry conditions are just as lethal as hot, humid heatwaves. According to Dr Gaurav Batra, Neurosurgeon (Brain & Spine), Max Hospital, Vaishali, understanding wet-bulb temperature is key to recognising why heatwaves are becoming increasingly life-threatening.

What is spinal stenosis? Spinal stenosis is a condition in which the space for the spinal cord and nerves narrows. This puts pressure on them, leading to symptoms like pain, numbness, or weakness. It’s usually caused by pressure on the spinal nerves as we age. Spinal stenosis can be caused by a variety of factors, including aging, which is the most common cause. It involves changes in the bones and discs that occur with age, including osteoarthritis, herniated discs, spinal injuries, and a congenital narrow spine. Symptoms include neck pain, numbness in the hands, tingling, and weakness, and in severe cases, loss of balance, back pain, pain or burning in the legs, increased pain with walking or standing, and weakness or numbness in the legs. Early identification and treatment of spinal stenosis can significantly control its symptoms. In this video, Dr. Gaurav Batra, Neurosurgeon (Brain & Spine), Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali, explains in detail about spinal stenosis.

When you may think of a stroke, you may imagine sudden, severe pain. But that assumption can be dangerously misleading. Experts warn that many strokes occur without any pain at all, making them harder to recognise and more likely to be ignored. According to a study in the journal Stroke, the lack of pain is a major reason people delay seeking emergency treatment. Dr. Gaurav Batra, Neurosurgeon (Brain & Spine), Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali, says, “In some instances, stroke does not cause any pain. Many people believe pain signals the onset, but this disease can occur without pain or with subtle symptoms that are often ignored.
